What is Visual Voicemail? How to Setup Voicemail on Android & iPhone?

Visual voicemail is a useful tool that lets you scroll through a list of your messages to play them instead of listening to them all in order. Also, a lot of platforms for visual voicemail have transcriptions so you can read notes in text form.

Visual voicemail comes with most new versions of Android and Apple’s iOS, and most cell phone companies offer it for free. Find out what visible voicemail is, how it works, and if you need it.

What is Visual Voicemail?

Visual voicemail is a feature of your phone that gives you a different way to interact with your messages:

  • Receive and listen to messages in any order
  • Scroll through messages visually
  • Save, archive, or delete messages by touch
  • Get transcription of most messages
  • Send voice messages via email or text

How does Visual Voicemail Work?

Traditional voicemail systems are just digital audio files that can only be played back in the order they were received. But with visual voicemail, you can look through a list of your messages and listen to whichever one you want. Often, you can read a transcript of the message as you listen to it. If you have an Android phone or an iPhone, you probably already use visual messages.

Visual voicemail was first added to Apple’s iOS in 2007, and Google’s chat app got native integration in 2015. Now, both iOS and Android come with visual messages built-in. It kind of looks like this:

Do you Need Messages with a Picture?

Yes, you need or at the very least want visual messages. I can’t imagine going back to the old message on a landline after using visual voicemail on my iPhone and Android for so long.

  • You can quickly look through all of your texts and find the ones you want. For me, the price of entry is worth it because I don’t have to listen to annoying or unwanted messages to get what I need.
  • You don’t have to listen to the messages to get what you need from them if they are transcribed. The above lesson is a good one: I only had to read the first three lines to know that it was about a doctor’s visit I had coming up.
  • To get your texts, you don’t have to call a number. It might sound silly, but I hated doing this, so I would put it off until my inbox was full, but not anymore.
  • You can send yourself or someone else a voice message quickly by email or text message. This is helpful if you want to send someone a specific message without having to explain it to them. Messages can be forwarded with simple (non-visual) voicemail, but it takes more work. Also, you won’t have to record calls on your iPhone to send music via text or email.

In general, you should be using visible voicemail if you aren’t already. It makes messages much less annoying than it used to be.
